2001: In 1985, while Clint was in the hospital, I joined the active army, and was stationed in the 2nd Ranger Bn at Fort Lewis, Wa. A very tough, motivated outfit that was a lot of fun and kept my mind off of Clint's death. I am glad the army had me on autopilot until I was able to get on with life. I went to nice places like Honduras and Panama, along with most of the United States. In 1990 I went to the Special Forces school and in 1991 got out of the active army and went back to OSU. By that time I was smart enough to study instead of partying the whole time and graduated with a history degree and a commission as an infantry officer. I spent a few years in the 10th Mtn Division at Watertown, NY. 20 below zero and snow up to the roof most of the year and a beautiful place to be in the summer. Canada was only 30 miles away and me and some buddies would hop on our overpriced Harley Davidsons and cross the border. While in New York, I started dating Sandi Bailey who has one son(24 years old) who is going to college in NY and driving a big truck for the paycheck. Sandi graduated from Cornell with a masters in social work. (She is a young 40). She is quite smart!! We married while I was stationed at Fort Benning, Ga(south of Atlanta). We went for the small wedding in a fancy old plantation, turned restaurant. After Fort Benning, the Army sent me to Fort Bragg, NC and I am currently a staff officer(behind a computer) while Sandi works at a private hospice in Fayetteville. I have decided to get out of the army one more time. I applied to be an air marshal and I assume the training will start next spring. I will take a pay cut...oh well. We own a house with 2 acres of woods, 1 pet dog, 2 cats and a rooster and a hen!!!! The chickens showed up in the yard one day and I decided to keep them. |
