Planning Updates

February 11, 2002

As you know, establishing a date of the reunion is paramount at this point and must be determined very soon. Vacations, weddings, children’s sports, and activities will no doubt limit our flexibility to find a date that will suit all. Here's what needs to be considered:

  1. Time – Simply put, we are running out of time. Six to nine months may seem like a long way off but in reality it’s around the corner. The same people who put together the 10th and 20th are attempting to do this again for the 25th. We have learned that much planning, bookings, money, and meetings will be required. This is done while trying to juggle time with work and family. Even arranging a meeting has proved difficult at times!
  2. Availability – Halls and conference rooms are booking up as we speak. Labor Day is freshman weekend at Oberlin College. The Root Room will be occupied. The Oberlin Inn will be swamped with parents. We have reviewed all available dates from June to December:
    • June – School, graduations.
    • July – A vacation month. Half the people at our meetings already have made commitments for vacations. I could only imagine many of our classmates have made commitments as well. However, we stand corrected.
    • August – most of our classmate’s kids are older and now participate in school related functions, i.e. band, pre-season conditioning, etc. Breaking away from these commitments are tough.
    • Fall – Labor Day is tough for reasons stated above. School is in session.
  3. Location – We thought Oberlin would be the best site for the reunion. Many still reside in or near Oberlin. This is combined with the fact that many still have family in or near Oberlin as well. Having a reunion outside Ohio would be very difficult for classmates due to family or financial reasons or both. Planning would be a nightmare to say the least.
  4. Money – We need time to raise money. This means getting a letter out to people as soon as possible. Some ‘committee’ members are willing (again) to make available their own money to hold a hall, reserve food, and buy items with the apparent risks. However, they would like to be reimbursed. The less time we have, the more difficult it will be to raise money.

We are going to put a deposit on the Root Room for Thanksgiving. The Oberlin Inn was (and still can be) considered. The prices were very high (almost double) when compared to Carnegie. As a means to help raise additional funds and seeing schoolmates, we will be inviting other classes.

As in the past, we also would like to keep the finances relatively simple and low. We plan, book, reserve and order with the idea of keeping things on a budget and with the realization that money is not plentiful for some people. We welcome anyone who wants to help not only with comments but with planning, coordinating, mailings, finances, phone calls, etc.
