1980

Bill Judson, after graduating from Wooster College and earning a master's degree in history from Oberlin College taught at Thompson Academy in Boston and at Brookwood School in Manchester, Massachusetts.

Bill taught at Pingree from 1968 to 1973. While at School he was an able chairman of the History Department as well as an adept faculty adviser to the student council. He was a fine teacher as the large following of his devoted students will testify. His particular field was modern European history and his particular hero was the Duke of Wellington; a School year never passed that he did not give a complete listing of the Duke's many orders and decorations to one of his classes.

As a bachelor Bill resided for some years in an apartment in Marblehead, which was part of the late Samuel Chamberlain's house. Chamberlain, the eminent engraver, etcher and photographer had considerable influence on and contributed greatly to Bill's knowledge of colonial New England. The two enjoyed a close friendship.

After Bill left Pingree he became engaged in real estate and more importantly in colonial house restoration in Newburyport. He was married in 1978 to the former Elizabeth Updike who had graduated from Pingree in 1973 and had been one of his former students.

Bill died suddenly on 28 February of this year. We extend to his widow Elizabeth, his mother Dorothy and his sister Barbara our great sympathy. Bill will be missed not only by them but also by his colleagues who benefited so greatly by his fund of knowledge and finally by the many students whom he inspired in his five years of teaching at Pingree School.
