Hilton Head, SC 1994. L to R: Dick and Susan; Nan and Dave Mabry
3/04
Dave departed Oberlin midway through his sophomore year, and headed to Arlington, Virginia because of his father being reassigned to that area. Dave completed high school there, and headed to the Naval Academy after a year of prep school in Maryland. Upon graduation from the Academy, he was commissioned a 2/LT in the Marine Corps which was his choice. The day after graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, and they embarked on a long journey together. They are still married, have 3 children, and live in Mineral, Virginia on Lake Anna. Dave retired from the USMC in 1986 in the grade of Colonel. He had a very successful career, and held some important jobs. A few examples are: aide to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Commandant of all US Marine Security Guards at Embassies throughout the world, and Chief of Enlisted Personnel Assignments. Like others of that era, he also served in combat in Vietnam. Other overseas assignments included Japan and Okinawa. After leaving military service, Dave worked for a defense contractor in the security field. Activities now include running, golf, and poker as well as visits to children and grandchildren. I list running first because he really enjoys it. While on active duty in the USMC, he ran appoximately 50 marathons. Now he just tries to maintain an acceptable level of physical fitness. Dave and his brother remain close, and we usually see each other about twice per year. Our oldest brother, Joe, is deceased as well as our parents. Dave and I strive to remain healthy and enjoy life. God has given us many blessings, one of which was to be a part of the Oberlin Community, and have the fond memories of the people and our classmates.
To paraphrase Bob Hope: Thanks for the Memories.
Sincerely, Dave/Dick
